Summoning the spirit of 2000’s hardcore, Dallas, Texas band Nygma has established a reputation for surrealistic lyrics, unorthodox guitar melodies, unpredictable shifts in tempo and rhythm, and wild stage presence.
Burnie, Colten, and Caleb have been playing music together for close to 16 years, they’ve been in other bands together as well as touring the US multiple times. The three of them met through local church functions in Mansfield, Ohio. Burnie met Daniel and Chris through the local scene in Denton, Texas. The five have been playing together for close to years now. NYGMA started as an outlet that wasn’t faith-based even though you hear them touch on their faith, backgrounds, and beliefs in lyrics. They grew up in Church/shul, their parents are pastors, etc. With NYGMA, they wanted to explore other avenues and that’s where they are now.
So great to have you for our interview today. Tell us about your latest single ‘The Fat Nasty’! The Radio plays are on FIRE!
It is a party song essentially, sort of tongue and cheek though. The party always ends with a hangover. Musically it’s one of our favorites to play live.
How has this musical work had an impact on you?
It has had a pretty significant impact for us. When we initially released it, we just saw it as another cool song that a few hundred people would hear. Never did we think it would be the song, to go all over america through radio, big spotify numbers, or help us get signed.
How is all the attention to the single near and dear to your heart?
We are just happy people are listening and enjoying it. The song starts off with a gospel styled intro for crying out loud, we didn’t expect people to respond to the “avant garde” styled songs we have produced.
What kind of mood has this attention brought to the band as a whole?
It has caused us to take the band more seriously. Before this band was just a hobby with the only intent to play live shows for fun to help us get away from life’s mundane routines. So we all are in a positive but more serious mood I suppose.
Where can readers go and listen to the single and support?!
