What has been the greatest moment of 2020 for you?
There have been 3 great moments for me in this crazy year.
1. Playing to a packed house at the world-famous Whisky A Go Go at the start of this year.
2. Losing, as of yesterday, 70 pounds.
3. My current single “You Know My Name” is doing well on terrestrial radio. I am really excited about this track that features my good friend Randall Bramblett on B3 organ.
How do you want your art to be remembered?
I guess that any artist would love to be a watershed artist that changed the field of which they are a part forever—LOL—but that isn’t going to happen for most of us.
I am not the musical version of Van Gogh. However, I would love to be remembered as an artist that fully embraced and explored what it means to be human and a kind person that gave back to the community of mankind and his fellow artists.
How have you felt most appreciated as a creative and artist?
I feel most appreciated when asked to share my knowledge with others and when being able to find a forum, like this interview, to share my perspective and of course, when someone buys one of my records LOL.
Who have been your strongest allies in your career?
I have been blessed to know so many good and talented people, it is hard to keep this list short, but, my wife, mom, and dad have been the most important of those that have supported and taught me. I could list all my professors both at Mercer University, where I went to college the first time, and my professors at Berklee Online where I have continued my education, but I would also have to say that getting to know Alan Parsons has been a great privilege! I have learned a lot, but also I have received a lot of love and support for what I do and just recently, Alan sent me a message where he proclaimed me as having “ The Best Ears In The Business”. What an honor!
What do you see as the most important part of your journey?
Hmmm, that is an interesting question. As life, and the art through which we seek to understand life, is a journey, the journey is always evolving and is never over. That being the case, the answer I give today is different than what my answer would have been a year ago and is different from what I might say next week. However, one thing that never changes and is at the heart of all I do is meeting new people, going new places, and staying connected with all those people and places I have already met along the way!
Please tell us about your latest project and how we can get involved!
My new single out now is called “You Know My Name”. It is a smoky blues rock track sizzling with lusty performances making every note pulse with attitude and is a swampy musical romp about a love that is partnered with lust for a woman that isn’t always interested in staying in the relationship. The song is part praise of the perfect woman, part plea for her to stay and part rebuke of some of the nonsense she pulls.
In the lyrics you can hear the story unfold—“Love can be cruel, oh but it can be so kind. I’m not playin’ games baby, no that’s only in your jealous mind”.
This new track features myself on guitar and vocal. With pounding drums and bass, a cookin’ horn section reminiscent of a Stax or Sun Studio track and the sweet singing of the B3 organ, this is a must listen for blues enthusiasts!
I produced and engineered “You Know My Name” at my Macon, Georgia, Shadow Sound Studio recording facility www.shadowsoundstudio.com. It features special guests Randall Bramblett of Traffic and Steve Winwood on B3 organ and Charlie Hoskyns of the UK band The Popes on bass.
I would greatly appreciate anyone that enjoys my music to stream it at one of the links below, but remember that I make almost nothing from those streams, so while I really really appreciate your support in any way that you wish to show it, buying a T-shirt or album from www.joeystuckey.com is the best thing you can do. And, please do also sign up for my email newsletter at this link https://eepurl.com/dg6LqT. We only send about one newsletter a month and do our best to keep them short and interesting—though sometimes both at the same time isn’t possible LOL.
