Dr. Michael Ison gives tips on how to beat the flu

The wonky weather is still wreaking havoc all over the country, but flu season is still upon us.  The good news is that there are many prevention and treatment options available and Dr. Michael Ison from the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University offers some expert advice on how to beat the flu.

Last year, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the flu season was the worst in at least 40 years.  It resulted in 960,000 hospitalizations and 79,000 deaths. Nearly 50 million Americans get the virus each year with most occurrences of it to take place in the winter.

The flu is very different from the common cold.  The flu is a respiratory virus that causes people to feel very sick all of a sudden.  People can feel fine in the morning and by afternoon they are miserable. The flu is very contagious and is easily spread by coughing and sneezing.  Frequent hand washing helps. but local outbreaks, seasonal epidemics and even global pandemics are possible when it comes to the spreadable nature of the flu.

XOFLUZA® (baloxavir marboxil), the new one-dose prescription flu medicine.

While getting flu shots and avoiding sick people are the first steps to take, there are now options on how to get over the flu sooner.  The flu typically lasts between five and seven days, but with new advancements in medicine, including the new one-dose XOFLUZA, you can feel better much faster.

Dr. Michael Ison spoke with Michelle Tompkins for The Hollywood Digest about the current flu season as well as the latest information in flu prevention and treatment options and explained how XOFLUZA works and where you can get it.
