7th & Hope is described as a Trans-Atlantic duo. How did that come about? How does that work?
Patricia: Yes, we are truly a Trans-Atlantic duo! Betty is based near London and I’m in Los Angeles. We met by chance in Ojai California at a songwriting camp. We were thrown together as part of a songwriting exercise during the retreat, and were challenged to write a song in 10 minutes. We instantly clicked and were the only team to finish writing a complete song—2 verses and a chorus–in ten minutes. I knew from that moment that we had something special and made it a point to stay in touch. That first song, “Timeless,” paved the way for writing more songs and the creation of our 7th & Hope duo project.
Betty: Totally. We also write a lot of our songs “trans-atlantically”. Even before virtual songwriting on zoom was a thing, we did most of our co-writes over facetime whilst I was in the UK and Patricia was in LA.
What seems the most pivotal when it comes to an artist’s career?
Betty: I think when you really understand what you want to say and what your point of view is as an artist is when things really start falling into place. And it’s a total bonus when you find a musical partner who is on the same page as you in that respect.
Patricia: Absolutely. Finding the people who get you and you get them is key. When you’re working with your people, there’s a flow, and work feels effortless. In the case of 7th & Hope, meeting each other and recognizing our creative synergy, despite the distance, was everything.
What has been the most pivotal moment in your career?
Betty: In 2017-18 our song Great Day To Be Alive from our first EP, The Brighter Side, placed in the John Lennon Songwriting contest and won the Grand Prize in the WCS (West Coast Songwriters) International Songwriting Contest. The following year we won The Peace Song Awards and the Positive Music Awards. Getting that recognition was really the start of doors opening for our music and it being heard by the industry.
Patricia: Having our music as the soundtrack to popular TV shows has really expanded our listening audience too. For example, last Summer, we had three of our songs in the hit Netflix show Selling Sunset, and because of that, we have seen our listener audience grow exponentially.
Talking about pivotal moments, new music coming with Brand New Day! How thrilling! Can you chat with us about it?
Patricia: We love Brand New Day! It’s one of our favorite songs! We started writing it when we were part of a songwriting camp at a castle in the French countryside. We met our co-writer Savannah Philyaw, a singer-songwriter from San Diego there, who was also part of the camp. The three of us finished writing and recording Brand New Day in Los Angeles when Betty came to Los Angeles for sessions.
Betty: Yeah and we all recorded the song with Billy Lefler (Ingrid Michaelson, Fall Out Boy, Lindsey Ray, Dashboard Confessional) who we love working with. He totally got our vision for the production and helped us bring the song to life.
Patricia: It’s so interesting that a song written pre-Covid is so relevant to where we are now, coming out of the pandemic. It’s a hopeful anthemic song about coming out of a dark time into a brand new day–seems like it was tailor-made for today.
Lyrics: Brand New Day–7th & Hope
I opened the door and I let the light in
It was getting so dark in the place that I’m in
It’s been a long time coming but I’m ready to start again
Ready to start again, here comes the dawn
Are you ready for a brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
Cuz I’m ready for a brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
Yesterday, just let it go
Make a way for a new tomorrow
Are you ready for a brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
I was at the end of the road, stopped at a dead end
The same old stories, got so tired of them
I’m gonna turn it around yeah, I’ll write a brand new page
Say goodbye to yesterday, here comes the dawn
Are you ready for a brand new day, brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
Cuz I’m ready for a brand new day, brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
Yesterday, just let it go
Make a way for a new tomorrow
Are you ready for a brand new day, brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
Cuz I’m ready for a brand new day, brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
Cuz I’m ready for a brand new day, brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
Oooo oooo oooo oo-oo
New leaf, turn it over
New me, off the sofa
New day, getting closer
Yesterday it was nice to know ya
New leaf, turn it over
New me, get off the sofa
New day, getting closer
Yesterday it was nice to know ya
Are you ready for a brand new day
Cuz I’m ready for a brand new day, brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
Are you ready for a brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
Cuz I’m ready for a brand new day, brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
Yesterday, just let it go
Make a way for a new tomorrow
Are you ready for a brand new day, brand new day
Hey hey hey hey
Cuz I’m ready for a brand new day, brand new day
Cuz I’m ready for a brand new day, brand new day
Oooo ooo ooooo
