Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Renowned Stage, Screen & TV Actor, Victor Garber.
Victor Garber is a beloved and highly acclaimed actor who has brought us hundreds of memorable performances in a career spanning over 5 decades.
On the big screen, you’ve seen him in great movies including “Godspell”, “Sleepless in Seattle”, “Jeffrey”, “The First Wives Club”, “Titanic”, “External Affairs”, “Legally Blonde”, “Milk”, and “Argo”, just to name a few. On television, he’s appeared in a whole slew of shows including “Eli Stone”, “Deception”, “Web Therapy”, “Tales of the City”, “Power”, “D.C.’s Legends of Tomorrow”, “The Orville”, “The Flash”, “Family Law” – and of course, we will always remember him as “Jack Bristow” in “Alias”, for which he received 3 Emmy Award nominations.
Victor Garber has also co-starred in many terrific TV movies and miniseries including “Charlie’s Aunt”, “Liberace: Behind the Music”, “The Legendary Life of Ernest Hemingway”, “Dieppe”, “Liberty: The American Revolution”, “Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows”, “The Music Man”, “The Last Templar”, and so many more.
Victor Garber has also had an illustrious career onstage. He’s appeared in 16 Broadway shows and received 4 Tony Award Best Actor nominations, for his work in “Damn Yankees”, “Lend Me a Tenor”, “Little Me” and “Deathtrap”. He also starred in the 1998 Tony Award winning Best Play, “Art”, as well as in “Hello Dolly”, “Present Laughter”, “Sweeney Todd”, “They’re Playing Our Song” and many more great shows. The list of accolades and awards this man has received is truly mind-blowing. In addition to the 4 Tony Award nominations mentioned, he’s been nominated for 6 Emmy Awards – 3 for his work in “Alias”, 2 for his guest appearances in “Will & Grace” and “Frasier”, and 1 for his portrayal of Judy Garland’s husband Sid Luft in “Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows”.
He won a Critics Choice Award for his work in “Milk”. He and his fellow cast members have been nominated for THREE Screen Actors Guild Awards for “Titanic”, “Milk” and “Argo”, and they WON for “Argo”. And if all of that weren’t enough, Victor Garber has been nominated for 6 Online Film and Television Association Awards, 4 Gold Derby Awards, 3 Gemini Awards, 3 Canadian Screen Awards, 2 Teen Choice Awards, and believe me, this just scratches the surface. In 2018 Victor Garber received the Theatre World John Willis Award for Lifetime Achievement. He also received a Star on the Canadian Walk of Fame, and in 2022, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Harvey Brownstone is a retired judge of the Ontario Court of Justice and was the first openly gay judge in Canada. He is also the bestselling author of “Tug of War: A Judge’s Verdict on Separation, Custody Battles and the Bitter Realities of Family Court” and hosted “Family Matters with Justice Harvey Brownstone,” a television talk show on matters involving the family justice system.
After a distinguished legal career, Harvey was appointed a judge at the age of 38 in 1995. He has presided in family and criminal courts. He has been a trailblazer in several ways. He was the first openly gay judge in Canada. He was the first sitting judge in the world to write a national best seller and to host a TV talk show.
Harvey has been a role model and icon in the LGBTQ community. When same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada in 2003, he was the only judge to make himself publicly available to officiate at weddings for lesbian and gay couples travelling to Toronto from all over the world to get married. In 2007, he officiated at the wedding of Edith Windsor and Thea Spyer, the American couple whose marriage triggered the 2013 United States Supreme Court decision overturning the definition of “spouse” in the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
In February 2021, Harvey launched his online talk show “Harvey Brownstone Interviews” on his own YouTube channel. He saw this as an interesting hobby. Within several months, the show attracted hundreds of thousands – and then eventually, millions – of viewers. Because of the overwhelming success of the show, Harvey decided to retire from the judiciary on December 31, 2021 after having presided as a full-time judge for 26 1/2 years. Free from the constraints imposed upon judges regarding the expression of opinions and the endorsement of private enterprise, Harvey now happily devotes his full-time attention to hosting “Harvey Brownstone Interviews” as a regular member of the public – albeit one with a rather illustrious and unique career history.
