Kate King’s new book can be best described in several words: Tell a new story. “The intention of this book is to provide helpful information on the subjects discussed,” King, MA, LPC, ATR-BC proclaims about The Radiant Life Project: Awaken Your Purpose, Heal Your Past, and Transform Your Future. “…If you choose to believe in anything, consider this: You were not meant to live a dull, uninspired life on autopilot…Contemplate the prospect that the entirety of your life, everything you believe and value, can be reworked.

With such an expansive mindset, you can allow space for your wounds to truly heal and your magnificent desires to bloom freely. Nothing is off-limits for this powerful work, no matter how deeply engrained or socially entangled it may be. Become courageous enough to invite gentleness in. Hear the whispers of your soul and body. When you listen to your Self as the source of wisdom, you will learn to honor your true nature and attend to the needs and desires within.”

King writes in a manner that would almost border on esoteric, but she has too much knowledge, class, and style. Whenever she does dip into unapologetic euphemisms, and out-and-out holism, it still feels like a pragmatic implementation and articulation ideologically. She writes with this sense of both emotional and psychosocial candor. I’m not entirely onboard with the particular brand of altruistic psychology King promotes, but not from a prognosis of merit. Perhaps that says more about myself, being somewhat of a cynic by nature.

But the thought provocations involved, and the considerable ramifications for good King swears by is genuinely compelling. I thoroughly enjoyed that aspect, that King seems invested in what she advocates for, not just from a professional standpoint, but a personal one to boot. “From an empowered perspective, you can bravely step off the rollercoaster of life, set down the expectations and obligations society has heaped upon your shoulders, and stop living a life you did not actively choose in exchange for one that truly fills and nourishes you from the inside out,” King states. “…Although human beings have much in common with one another, we are not all built and wired the same. Depending on your genes, the amount of nurturance you received in your childhood and young adult environment, and whether you lean more toward the orchid or dandelion ends of the temperament spectrum, your authentic Self will need unique sustenance, stimuli, care, and support in order to radiate its brilliance into the world.”

She underscores, “Self to exist as whole and valuable in its natural form. The point is not to force an orchid child into a dandelion temperament or vice versa. This will fail every time, and it will damage that precious Self. If you happen to identify with the orchid temperament, I invite you to lean in and fully embrace that valuable facet of who you are. Lovingly place your hand over your heart and tell yourself that you are exactly who you were meant to be—your tenderness is one of your gifts.”
