NYGMA IS BASED OUT OF DALLAS, TX. BURNIE, COLTEN, & CALEB HAVE BEEN PLAYING MUSIC TOGETHER FOR CLOSE TO 16 YEARS. THEY’VE BEEN IN OTHER BANDS TOGETHER AS WELL, IN ADDITION TO TOURING THE US MULTIPLE TIMES. THE 3 OF THEM MET THROUGH LOCAL CHURCH FUNCTIONS IN MANSFIELD, OH. BURNIE MET DANIEL & CHRIS THROUGH THE LOCAL SCENE IN DENTON, TX.

NYGMA STARTED AS AN OUTLET THAT WASN’T FAITH BASED. EVEN THOUGH YOU HEAR THEM TOUCH ON THEIR FAITH, BACKGROUNDS, & BELIEFS IN LYRICS. THEY GREW UP IN CHURCH/SHUL, PARENTS ARE PASTORS, ETC. WITH NYGMA, WE WANTED TO EXPLORE OTHER AVENUES AND THAT’S WHERE WE ARE.

Let us in on your new music The Fat Nasty! When did you record it?

We started writing and recording it during the start of the pandemic. When the lockdowns first started, our singer started drinking a lot, and he woke up one day so hungover that he felt like he was going to die. He started writing tongue and cheek lyrics, trying to make light of a horrible day.

How did you come up with the title?

‘The Fat Nasty’ is a phrase used by the band growing up, describing “epic breakdowns” in punk/hardcore music. It has nothing to do with the song, and is a throw away phrase used in the song.

Any writing traditions you have that you set in place when you wrote this song?

We tend to throw writing tropes out the window when we make songs. We just write how we feel at the moment.

Any other traditions you have when you’re in your recording process?

We usually put all of our ideas into a rough demo, warts and all. We go back and tweak the song and recording over time.

What challenges came with recording this music?

The challenge is always the mix. Making a good mix is hard for amateurs like us.

Who did you collaborate with in the studio?

We love collaboration, and collaborating with friends as much as possible.

Any recording stories you have that you’ll remember forever from this music? Please share one with us!

We tried recording the “gang vocals/crowd vocals” for ‘The Fat Nasty’ one night when we all had too many drinks in us. Listening back, the takes were so bad, and out of tune, all we could do was laugh the rest of the night.

You just signed with Aspire to Empire Records! Congrats! What are you most excited about with this new chapter?

We are just honored that they would even want us on their roster because we are not your typical radio rock band. We are excited to play more shows, and be exposed to more and more people.

What do you want fans to appreciate about your artistry when it comes to this new music?

We are a local band, so we try to stand out in every way from our contemporaries in the scene. We would hope they would appreciate everything from our unique songs in the heavy genre, to our frenetic live sets.

After the new year we typically forget about our resolutions, have you kept yours when it comes to your music making?

Our goal was just to play at least one show every month and we have! I’m not sure what we will shoot for this coming year.
