Armed with a bevy of sad girl anthems and incredible vocal prowess, Kendall Rucks is Indie Pop magic. Read on to learn more about the Powerful Girl behind the artistic sound.

Thanks for your time today Kendall, Blood Money is so powerful.  Where did you write it and what was the process in the studio like?

I wrote Blood Money actually in the basement ballroom of the Biltmore Hotel in Downtown LA. There was a wedding happening that night and I just waltz passed security and found myself going through and down halls till I reached this beautiful big room with a great grand piano. I had the melody idea but really sat down and wrote the song that night in that room

It’s no secret that the music biz is tough and not for the faint of heart. What’s the biggest problem you’ve had to overcome so far?

Probably that mere talent is not enough and that labels really aren’t working to develop artists anymore but instead expecting an artist to finance the lean years on their own.  That’s annoying

What do you enjoy most about being a musician?

The community! The kindest best people are the musicians and singers working in the music scene and they inspire me endlessly. Another one, of course, is the connection between the listener and artist. When that electric connection happens, it’s the most amazing part of being a singer

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

What I listed above.  I would also love to change the old school notion that things need to be done in this specific certain way or else you wont be successful. Music and the business of it is changing rapidly and we should all as artists be one step ahead of that curve. There is no recipe anymore.

Is writing music therapeutic for you?  And if so, how?

It is!! It’s strange though, I really am an optimistic positive person but I seem to really brood in my lyrics.  It’s like I expell that darker moodier side of myself through my music to stay sane In my daily life. The hardest song for me to write is a happy love song. A sad love song, a sexy love song , a mad love song – I’ll write them in my sleep but happy stuff…I don’t know…It’s harder for me to get into

How often do you hear the Marilyn Monroe or Veronica Lake comparisons?

Quite alot! Both of those women definitely inspire me. I used to watch all these old rare videos of Marilyn Monroe just to fall asleep at night. I love her and I love her voice
